This is the typical dwelling of an Irish family farm. Dairy farming and drystock raising are the staples of life here, with much meadowing but only small crops of potatoes and oats, mangels and turnips. About ten acres of arable land was balanced by some eighty acres of rough pasture and bog, and supported six cows, with calves, pigs and fowl. Turf, cut in the bog and sold in the town, brought a small but secure income!

This is a simple two-roomed Irish cottage. A settle bed converted the kitchen into a bedroom when needed. In the old days of wooden sailing ships, and the too frequent wrecks, shore dwellers depended largely on flotsam and jetsam for their timber, and found use for many other things cast up on the shore. Most of the timbering of this house and its like would be of driftwood, which often came in huge planks and beams. Smuggling was a feature of life here in the old days and many of the hardy fishermen were familiar with the ports of north western France and the Channel Islands .Claret and brandy were the local drinks, rather than beer and whiskey!

This little dwelling of a poor Irish farmer is in utter contrast to that of the rich farmer nearby. The farmer would let a small piece of ground to the labourer, who would pay off the rent in labour, about 80 days in the year. For the rest of the time could work for himself or for wages. The house is of the simplest kind, only one room with a bare hearth and a floor of packed earth. Their only livestock would be a few hens or ducks. Such a labourer, if permanently employed on the same farm, would have some milk, vegetables and occasionally a piece of salt beef or bacon from the farmhouse and his wife would also be employed there in the house or farmyard. Such a family would be well off among labourers. Most it is to be feared, were less lucky!

Travelers are part of a tradition which we all have roots in. Humankind has only settled in permanent settlements for the last maybe 8,000 years worldwide. Gypsies have been part of our society for many hundreds of years. They were originally believed to be Egyptians, which is where the name 'Gypsy' comes from. The idea that they came from Egypt was probably due to their dark complexion, exotic and colourful clothing. However the Romany language, which is a language unique to Gypsies throughout Europe and is still spoken today, originates from Sanskrit, a language of humanity which evolved in the Indian subcontinent. To day, they are believed to have migrated from India through the Middle East, Europe and the Mediterranean, eventually reaching Ireland. As they travelled across Europe, they brought with them music, dance, artistry crafts, and language which has become part of our everyday use and integral to our culture!
